The 50 most controversial movies ever

Warning: What follows is explicit. These movies (and their accompanying photos) are not chosen for their beauty, but rather for their primal power to shock. And why is that important? Sometimes, in the case of politics and sex, filmmakers can be liberators, leading a charge that elevates the medium’s significance. Elsewhere—especially in the case of violence—a movie can warn us of where we might be headed. These 50 entries are the extremes. We welcome your response.

It's hard for any one person to compile a definitive list on controversial movies-not perfect, but better than AMC's. I would have added: Kongo (1932), The Tin Drum, Whore, Sweet Movie, The Emperor Jones, Henry Portrait of a Serial Killer, Baby Face, WR Mysteries of the Organism, Le'olo, Siberia film, The City of Women, Borowczyk's The Beast, etc.; Though, Salo (banned in many countries for over twenty years) would probably top my list. As dated, un-defensible,and shock oriented, as the sex and violence may come off to the casual viewer, the deeper themes involving power, politics, consumerism, class, and your complicity as the viewer, really elevate the film beyond 70's euro-exploitation into the very definition of what a controversial film is.

Serbian Film tops any of these. It is so real and messed up. Cannibal Holocaust wasn't disturbing because it was so blatantly fake, except for the animal killings, but it was more sad than disturbing. Human Centipede any of the Saw's, and such aren't disturbing. They're just gore-fests/horror flicks. Serbian film hasn't left me, it fucks with you and its premise is vile... despite everything i've said you should watch it.
