The 50 most controversial movies ever

Warning: What follows is explicit. These movies (and their accompanying photos) are not chosen for their beauty, but rather for their primal power to shock. And why is that important? Sometimes, in the case of politics and sex, filmmakers can be liberators, leading a charge that elevates the medium’s significance. Elsewhere—especially in the case of violence—a movie can warn us of where we might be headed. These 50 entries are the extremes. We welcome your response.

Good list. I've seen 33. No Breillat or Jodorowsky or Lynch?

How come Spriski Film (A Serbian Film) isnt on this list? It more disturbing and controversial than alot of movies on this list; especially Reservoir Dogs. Im not really sure why that one is even on this list. At any rate i dont think this list is accurate at all without A Serbian Film.

It's more of a list of controversial films. Sure there are some vile movies out there much worse than these, but because most of them are more 'underground' they wouldn't incite as large of a controversy like the others on this list. How many people in the media were upset about A Serbian Film? Not as many as when the Harry Potter books came out I'll tell ya that.

I'd have to agree that there are some glaring omissions. An enjoyable article that probably would have benefitted from better research.
