Her inspirations: “The people around me, mostly. I grew up skateboarding and being interested in BMX biking. Up until a couple years ago, I was inspired mostly by street and skate culture. Punk and Riot Grrl music influences my look a lot. I still enjoy having those elements as a part of my look. A little bit of hip hop definitely comes into play. Also, the films Quadrophenia and Rockers, as well as looks seen on fashion blogs like Street Peeper and The Sartorialist.”
Favorite stores: Hootenanny, 40 South Street, Dame, Bobby from Boston
Her favorite accessories: Plaid at least a few times a week
Favorite designers/brands: Brooklyn Circus, Opening Ceremony, Supreme, Hood by Air.
“I’m aware of trends and I’ll peep at Fashion Week, but I don’t follow designers in specific. I’m more interested in thinking of it in regards to my personal style to keep up with trends.”
How she describes Boston style: “Almost regional by neighborhood, in little tribes. Jamaica Plain is a cross between hipster and hippy. I’ve lived in JP for ten years, and have always seen the hoodie, skinny jeans and sneaker look, bouncing between Chucks and Dunks.”
How her style has evolved through the years: “The more I gained confidence in who I am—with being gender non-conforming, androgynous, queer, black—the more I gained confidence in how I dressed. But essentially, I've been wearing the same general get-up ever since I started dressing myself which is at its core, button
downs and jeans.”
