50 things to do this fall
Food Trucks
With a ton of help from the Mayor’s Office, the food truck business in Boston is booming—and we the curbside masses are reaping the benefits. Some of our favorites include the Vietnamese BonMe (City Hall Plaza, Monday-Friday 11:30am–3pm; SoWa Open Market, Sundays, 11am–4pm; bonmetruck.com), the meaty and elusive Staff Meal (sporadic evenings, Loring-Greenough House, Jamaica Plain, Sundays at SoWa Open Market; staffmealboston.com) and the simplistically fantastic Roxy’s Grilled Cheese (Cleveland Circle, Brighton; Some Sundays at SoWa Open Market, some Sundays; roxysgrilledcheese.com). Take a writing class
That crisp autumn wind you’re feeling? That’s inspiration. It’s time to finally sit down and punch out that novel/poetry collection/screenplay. Get the creative juices flowing with a writing workshop at Grub Street, Boston’s leading creative writing center. You can take one-off workshops like “Funny is the New Deep,” led by local author Steve Almond (Sep. 14, $65), or the day-long “The Unreliable Narrator in Fiction” (Oct. 16, $115). Or make a habit of it with regular workshops like the six-week-long “Finding Your Book” (starting Sep. 20, $305). 160 Boylston St, Theater District, Boston (617-695-0075; grubstreet.org)
Boston Vegetarian Food Festival
As part of its mission to help people, animals and the environment, the Boston Vegetarian Association presents the 16th Annual Boston Vegetarian Food Festival. For two days, the Reggie Lewis Athletic Center in Roxbury Crossing will be stocked with animal-free goodies. The free event will feature herds of local vendors serving up samples and dishing advice on where to get veggie-friendly staples and what do to with them (we all know that bringing home the tofu is only half the battle). All are welcome, from the longtime vegan to the veg-curious. Free. Oct 29–Oct 30. Reggie Lewis Athletic Center, 1350 Tremont St, Roxbury Crossing, Roxbury (bostonveg.org/foodfest)
